From January 1, 2026, the global maritime shipping policy for coconut shell carbonized material will undergo a fundamental change: it must be declared and transported as a hazardous material.
This is primarily driven by the amendments in the International Maritime Organization’s IMDG Code, Amendment 42-24.
The new regulations eliminate previous exemptions and impose strict controls on packaging, temperature, transportation, documentation, warehousing, and other aspects.
Chinese coconut shell activated carbon producers are expected to face rising costs and compliance challenges, while raw material suppliers will encounter stricter procedural requirements.
As a result, the price of coconut shell activated carbon may rise further.
